Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Indonesia. Following initial activity in late October 2010, ongoing eruptions and unusual behavior from Mount Merapi volcano at Yogyakarta into December had claimed at least 353 human lives, not to mention countless animals, with some 390000 distressed villagers being driven from their homes in efforts to ensure their safety. (Excerpts in Indonesian) Sukiman Mochtar Pratomo, Affected villager, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (m): This time Merapi makes us confused. Besides, the people get worried by the thundering sound, as well as sort of a leaking volcano. The wind has no direction anymore. That makes us restless too. And the forest is on fire because of explosions at the time of the eruptions. That is an unusual thing for Merapi. VOICE: From the start of the catastrophe, Supreme Master Ching Hai had been closely monitoring the situation, conveying all her love and prayers as she donated US$15000 and requested that our Association’s relief team go to bring aid and comfort to the most desperate. Along with contributions from our Association members, the combined US$18600 donation could purchase US$216000 in urgent necessities if bought in the United States, based on Indonesia’s cost of living. As per Supreme Master Ching Hai’s instructions, our Association’s relief team had immediately organized and started bringing aid to the afflicted the day after the first eruption. They opened a public vegan kitchen . . .

Supreme Master Ching Hai International relief news from Massachusetts, USA. As unprecedented deadly tornadoes struck in and around the city of Springfield, Massachusetts at the end of May, at least four people lost their lives with many others injured. About 1400 structures were damaged, including 400 destroyed homes. As state Governor Deval Patrick initiated recovery efforts, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) opened additional tornado recovery centers for affected victims o seek assistance. Conveying her heartfelt sympathies and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$20000 for urgent needs, asking our nearby Association members to please bring urgent supplies and comfort the most afflicted. Our Association’s relief team in Massachusetts consulted with the local Red Cross on specific needs, and thus were able to deliver kitchen and other supplies including items for babies to a main shelter serving 300 people with elderly and young children. In addition, starting June 16, the Association member-run Loving Hut provided about thousands of free hot vegan meals and water for the next two weeks. Many of the relief recipients were trying such tasty nourishing vegan food for the first time and kept returning for more, while also receiving informative SOS flyers about the veg solution to prevent climate change-related disasters. They expressed their appreciation for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving care. With gratefulness to Governor Patrick, the Massachusetts . . .

Entry from: Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep Entry Title: “Good News!” Entry: “Exchanged money in the morning swapping some dollars for Kip with Laos accepting Dollars, Baht, Kip and Euros and with me trying to convert into home GBP also meant it was becoming a bit of a headache every time you wanted to buy something. Went for a wander around town in the morning which really made me realize what a picturesque town this is full of colonial architecture and monks seemingly everywhere going to and from the many Wats all topped off by a guy shimmying up a palm tree for some coconuts. The town also seems to be filled with signs like any other place advertising tickets and tours but here they all seem to use the same tag line of ‘Good News” which just reminded me of Futurama everywhere I went. After lunch we visited a waterfall outside of town with the water being pretty cool but refreshing after the last few days hot sun. The waterfall was impressive with the wet season water cascading down from far above with the steps running up beside it turning into mini-waterfalls also with the amount of water coming down. Having to stop and fix a flat tyre on the bus on the way back to town we were oddly dropped off miles from our guesthouse without a thanks for helping with the tyre and an all you can eat . . .

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Sri Lanka. Heavy rains since December claimed lives and affected 364000 people across the country by early January. In particular, three weeks of intense rains battered the Eastern province district of Batticaloa, and in Manmunai West District, the dual effect of rising water levels and the deliberate release of water in an attempt to control/save a reservoir endangered the lives of thousands. Brigadcer Weragama – Director of Emergency Operations, National Disaster Management Center (M): Due to the climate change, we are experiencing heavy rain, that intensity has gone up. Earlier the rainfall what we got within one week, now we are getting in one or two days. N. Vilvaratnam — Divisional Secretary, Manmunai West District (M): There are 8237 families affected by the flood. Actually, we are facing a lot of problems because there is no access from any other places from here. Relief recipient (M): Supreme Master Ching Hai came to Batticola to support those who were affected by the floods. Really we’re happy. Conveying her sympathies and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai donated US$15000, an amount that could purchase US$155000 in urgent items if acquired in the United States, based on Sri Lanka’s cost of living. She also requested our Association members to go if possible to render aid to those most in need. Covering their own travel and accommodation expenses of approximately US$2500, our . . .

Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news from Thailand. Since the end of March, heavy storms and flash floods swept across 10 southern Thai provinces. At least 61 lives were lost and over 2 million people affected. Tens of thousands of villagers were displaced. With all her love and prayers, Supreme Master Ching Hai had donated US$20000 for emergency aid, asking that our Association members please go to assist those most in need. This amount could purchase US$109000 in urgent items obtained in the United States, based on the cost of living in Thailand. After traveling to the worst-hit areas and delivering emergency food supplies in Surat Thani Province, our Association’s relief team from Bangkok, Thailand, including a doctor and nurse, found that many villages in Anoppithum District were still in need of aid but had been isolated by damaged roads and debris. As soon as the roads were repaired by the government, the relief team was able to bring supplies of vegan food, noodles, and soy milk, along with SOS flyers, to four villages. Victim1 (M): When the flooding occurred I was near the embankment. I went to get relief aid to distribute to the villagers. When I came back, I could not see my house anymore. We need materials to build shelter. I would also like to thank Master for her goodness, which has come to help us this time. I will repay your kindness by helping the community and eating vegan food. Councillor for Krungching Mr. Pon Chan Jum (M): On . . .
